Sewing a classic polo shirt

A classic polo shirt is an absolute basic in every wardrobe. It combines chic, comfort and sportiness and thanks to the loose, slightly tailored cut it is comfortable to wear. Whether with or without a collar, the button placket makes the shirt a real eye-catcher. The NAIK polo shirt is versatile. The collar can also peek out from under a fine business sweater, for example. In summer it goes perfectly with chinos or sporty shorts. But a polo shirt also always looks good in a skater look. The NAIK polo shirt is designed for stretchy fabrics - even the collar. You can also sew the shirt as a Henley shirt without a collar and just with a button placket! Thanks to the detailed and well-illustrated instructions, the button placket is no problem even for advanced beginners.

Sewing an individual women's shirt, even as an ambitious beginner

At first glance, this cut presents a few challenges: the button placket and polo collar are daunting at first. But it is actually very easy to sew the polo shirt. Advanced beginners will have no problems sewing the polo shirt thanks to the well-illustrated instructions.

The name NAIK

What kind of strange name is that? Polo shirts are particularly popular in the sports sector - especially in equestrian sports. In reference to the game of polo, this pattern is called NAIK. That is Indonesian and means "riding".

Fabric recommendation:

Stretchy materials are best for the polo shirt. High-quality pique, the classic polo shirt fabric, is ideal. Jersey, stretchy summer sweat or jacquard jersey are also suitable. For the collar, use the same fabric, stabilized with a little iron-on interlining. You can also use ready-made polo collars - please measure carefully!

Fabric consumption:

For the NAIK polo shirt you need the following amount of fabric (based on 140 cm fabric width including seam allowances and buffer):

  • Size XS, S, M: 1.10 m
  • Size L: 1.20 m
  • Size XL: 1.30 m
  • Size XXL: 1.70 m

You also need:

  • Iron-on interfacing at 90 cm width, 0.20 m for the collar and button placket e.g. H609
  • 4 small buttons for the button panel, snap fasteners also work
  • Color-matching sewing thread

For the version without a collar, with a bound neckline, you either need about 5 cm more of your main fabric to the full width, or you use ready-made elastic bias binding or folding elastic.
