The jersey needle has a very rounded tip and is mainly used for knitted fabrics. The tip is so rounded so that it displaces the fabric fibers when inserted and does not damage them. If you were to sew jersey with a leather needle, for example, the needle would destroy the structure and runs would form at the seams.

When it comes to the question of needle thickness, there is a very simple rule of thumb that you can follow: the thickness of the needle should match the thickness of the fabric. Thin fabrics such as jersey are sewn with a 70 or 80 needle. Thicker fabrics such as French terry or sweat are sewn with a 90 needle.
