sewing a wrap dress
Wrap dresses are a real eye-catcher and GAYA proves this across the board. The cut, simple and knee-length, is a real figure flatterer and very versatile. The neckline emphasizes the décolleté beautifully, while the wrap dress creates a slim silhouette. For the sleeves, you can choose between two long versions - classic narrow or moderately wide with elastic at the sleeve hem. GAYA is summery without sleeves. Particularly practical: the wrap dress is discreetly closed with a button on each side, so that you can also wear GAYA without a belt. You can also sew GAYA as a wrap blouse. Choose flowing festive fabrics, or sew GAYA from printed blouse fabrics as an airy spring and leisure dress.
This dress is an absolute figure flatterer. It emphasizes the narrowest part and the wrap technique beautifully highlights the neckline without being obtrusive. Depending on the fabric and pattern, it can be a cheerful, airy companion or a really chic piece for going out! You can choose between narrow, classic long sleeves or you can opt for the fashionable sleeves, the width of which is captured with an elastic band at the wrist. The cut shows a knee-length skirt, but the GAYA dress also looks good in maxi length or as a blouse!
Wrap Dress Sewing, even as an advanced beginner
GAYA requires less sewing experience than a delicate touch and precision. The cut is quite easy to sew, but the neckline requires special attention. It is important that the edges do not stretch, which can easily happen with bias cuts. We will show you the best way to do it.
The e-book takes you step by step with lots of pictures, making cutting and sewing child's play. The e-book also contains a small basic section in which common terms and sewing vocabulary are briefly explained. Printing and gluing the pattern together is also explained in detail!
The name GAYA
GAYA is Indonesian and means "style", and this dress has a lot of that. A stylish and feminine companion for every occasion - from delicate and airy to classically elegant.
Fabric recommendation:
For the GAYA dress, we recommend woven fabrics with a nice drape, not too stiff. The following qualities are therefore ideal: viscose woven fabrics, viscose-linen blends, crepe fabrics, jacquard, blouse fabrics or even soft velvet and satin. Of course, you can also sew GAYA in a very glamorous way using sequin fabrics or other evening wear fabrics. Cotton woven fabrics are only recommended to a limited extent; they should not be too stiff. Muslin or linen are not recommended.
Fabric consumption:
For the GAYA dress you need the following amount of fabric (based on 140 cm fabric width including seam allowances and buffer):
A dress:
- size 34-38 = 3.20 m
- size 40-44 = 3.90 m
- size 46-50 = 4.15 m
- size 52-56 = 4.65 m
Blouse:
- size 34-38 = 2.35 m
- size 40-44 = 2.35 m
- size 46-50 = 3.00 m
- size 52-56 = 3.35 m
You also need:
- Matching the fabric, iron-on tape to reinforce the edges, e.g. interfacing
- Matching the fabric, iron-on fleece to reinforce the facings, e.g. Vlieseline H410
- 2 buttons (alternatively snap fasteners)
- Possibly elastic band (0.5 cm wide) for the sleeve hems
- Color-matching sewing thread
