Sewing a woven strap dress with a smocked effect
Light and airy, the modern GARIS strap dress will put you in the holiday mood straight away. The dress has a smocked insert at the back for a perfect fit in the top. The ruffled skirt swings loosely around the legs in calf-length or knee-length. The dress is buttoned all the way through at the front. Whether on the beach or strolling around town, GARIS always cuts a fine figure. It goes just as well with flip-flops as with sneakers, ballerinas or pumps, with a cardigan, blazer or leather jacket! The dress is simply perfect for summer. The front part in the women's cut is split, here fabric patterns can be used effectively in the diagonal grain! The front top is doubled so that nothing flashes through even fine fabrics. Patch pockets and a tie belt round off the dress. Sewn from cooling linen, GARIS is a true summer (night) dream to wear! But the dress is also a beautiful eye-catcher in other light woven fabrics. The GARIS cut is also available for kids!
Sewing a smocked dress with a button placket, even as a somewhat advanced sewist
The GARIS strap dress is easy to sew for more advanced hobby seamstresses. Thanks to these instructions, you will definitely be able to sew the button panel without any problems. The gathered back can be a bit of a challenge, which is why we have classified the difficulty as "medium".
The e-book takes you step by step with lots of pictures, making cutting and sewing child's play. The e-book also contains a small basic section in which common terms and sewing vocabulary are briefly explained. Printing and gluing the pattern together is also explained in detail!
The name GARIS
GARIS is Indonesian. The word "garis-garis" means striped - in reference to the many striped summer dresses, the name is really fitting.
Fabric recommendation:
The best fabrics for the dress are airy woven fabrics that don't fall too flowing. Linen, viscose-linen, half-linen and other blends are best, but seersucker, cotton woven fabric, batiste, muslin or light chambray are also good choices. It is important that the fabric can be smoked well - it's best to test it out first!
Fabric consumption:
For the GARIS strap dress you need the following amount of fabric (based on 140 cm fabric width including seam allowances and buffer):
Calf-length dress:
- Size XS - 2.40 m
- Size S and M - 2.50 m
- Size L and XL - 2.80 m
Knee-length dress:
- Size XS - 2.20 m
- Size S and M - 2.30 m
- Size L and XL - 2.60 m
You also need:
- 1 m slightly elastic interlining strip, 1 cm wide
- 0.20 m elastic band, 3 mm wide
- 8-10 buttons
- Color-matching sewing thread
- elastic thread or sewing elastic for the smocking
- Optionally some iron-on interfacing to reinforce the button panel, e.g. Vlieseline H180
